Electric-Only Lake: Mercury Avator
If gas motors are prohibited, the Avator line is the answer we can actually stand behind, because we sell and support it.
A real example: a 12-foot aluminum boat with two adults and fishing gear on a kilometre-wide electric-only lake runs happily on an Avator 7.5e. It replaces a 3.5 HP gas outboard, the battery swaps like a power-tool pack, and there is no fuel to haul in or store at the cottage.
Things to size before ordering:
- Range: battery capacity against how far you actually run in a day
- Charging: what the cottage's power situation supports
- Weight: motor plus battery, if you carry it down to the dock each visit

10 HP Limit: Mercury 9.9 FourStroke
The 9.9 FourStroke is the honest ceiling on a 10 HP lake, and it is the motor we rig most often for this job. Tiller steering keeps it simple, and electric-start versions are available if rope pulls are getting old.
A 14-foot aluminum boat with two adults and a cooler will cruise all day on a 9.9. It will not be fast. On a 10 HP lake, nothing is, and that is rather the point.
On the HBW pricing reference checked September 5, 2026, the 8 HP costs more than the 9.9 HP in four matching tiller configurations: 8MH versus 9.9MH, 8MLH versus 9.9MLH, 8EH versus 9.9EH, and 8ELH versus 9.9ELH. Compare the exact configuration rather than assuming less horsepower means a lower price.
20 HP Limit: Mercury 15 or 20 FourStroke
On 20 HP lakes the Mercury 20 FourStroke gets a 14-foot tin boat planing with one aboard, and the 15 shares the same block with a little less punch. Both are available in tiller, and both leave you legal.
No Posted Limit: Right-Size It Anyway
No limit does not mean maximum power. It means the load decides.
- 14-16 ft aluminum, two adults, fishing: Mercury 25-40 FourStroke is plenty
- 16 ft runabout, family of four, tube in tow: 40-60 FourStroke
- Small pontoon to 20 ft, calm water: Mercury 60 FourStroke moves it respectably
Stay inside the boat's capacity plate, match the motor to what you actually carry, and remember that on a small lake you spend most of your time well below wide-open throttle.
