The short version: every new Mercury outboard sold in Canada comes with a 3-year limited warranty AND a 3-year corrosion warranty — both starting the day you buy it, both ending the same day three years later. They're concurrent, not stacked. Anyone telling you you have "six years of coverage" is reading the brochure wrong.
We're a Mercury Platinum dealer in Ontario since 1965. We do warranty work in our shop every week. This is the version of the warranty conversation we have with customers when they're buying a new motor or wondering if it's worth extending.
The Two Standard Warranties (Both 3 Years, Both Start Day One)
Every new Mercury outboard sold in Canada includes:
1. Mercury 3-Year Limited Warranty. Covers manufacturing defects in the motor — powerhead, gearcase, ignition, electronics, fuel system. If something fails because of a defect (not abuse, not neglect, not wrong oil), Mercury covers parts and labour at any authorized Canadian dealer.
2. Mercury 3-Year Corrosion Warranty. Covers structural corrosion of the motor — hull-side surfaces, mounting bracket, exterior components. Important to understand: this runs concurrently with the limited warranty, not after it. Both clocks start the day you buy. Both stop on the same day three years later.
This is the single most-misunderstood part of Mercury's warranty. Some sales pitches frame it as "3+3 = six years of coverage." It isn't. You get three years total, with two different things being covered during those three years.
That said — three years of full Mercury factory coverage is genuinely excellent for the marine industry. Most competing brands offer two to three years on similar terms. Mercury's the floor of the category, not the ceiling.
What's Actually Covered
The 3-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects in:
- Powerhead components (cylinders, valves, ignition, EFI)
- Gearcase internals (gears, shafts, seals)
- Electrical and electronic systems (SmartCraft module, charging, sensors)
- Fuel delivery system (injectors, fuel pump, lines)
- Outboard structure as designed and built
The corrosion warranty covers structural corrosion that wasn't caused by external damage or abuse:
- Hull-side surfaces of the motor
- Bracket and mid-section
- Trim system housing
- Anodes are wear items and excluded (you replace those yourself)
What's NOT covered under either warranty:
- Wear items (impellers, anodes, spark plugs, propellers, fuel filters, oil)
- Damage from collision, grounding, or operator error
- Damage from improper installation by anyone other than an authorized Mercury dealer
- Damage from running ethanol pump gas if Mercury can show fuel-system failure
- Damage from running the wrong oil grade or skipping break-in
- Damage from saltwater use on a motor not specified for salt
- Modifications, racing use, or commercial use on a recreational-spec motor
The phrase "improper installation" matters. A Mercury installed by your buddy at the cottage doesn't have warranty coverage in the same way a Mercury installed by an authorized dealer does. This is one reason we strongly recommend having any new Mercury rigged at a Mercury dealer — the rigging itself is a covered service, and the documentation protects you if anything fails later.
Mercury Product Protection (MPP) — The Extended Warranty
If you want coverage beyond the standard three years, Mercury sells Mercury Product Protection (MPP) — the official factory extended warranty.
Key facts:
- Up to 8 years total coverage (3 standard + 5 MPP) on most current 4-stroke models
- Must be purchased while the original warranty is still active. Not "within 1 year of purchase" — that's an old rule that's been retired. The current rule: any time before your standard 3-year coverage ends.
- Transferable with the motor if you sell it (private sale or dealer trade-in)
- Same dealer network — any authorized Mercury dealer in Canada honours MPP claims
- Covers the same scope as the original limited warranty, including parts and labour
What MPP costs (rough): Pricing varies by motor HP and term length. As a rough range:
- A 90 HP 4-stroke with a 5-year MPP: roughly $1,200–$1,800 CAD
- A 200 HP V6 with a 5-year MPP: roughly $1,800–$2,800 CAD
- A V8/V10 Verado with a 5-year MPP: roughly $2,800–$4,000+ CAD
Is it worth it? Honest take from our shop: for motors over 90 HP, yes — the cost of one major out-of-warranty repair (cracked block, blown head gasket, lower unit rebuild) easily exceeds the MPP price. For smaller motors, it's a closer call; the math depends on how risk-tolerant you are. Most of our 115 HP+ buyers add MPP. About half of our 90 HP buyers do. Below 90 HP, it's less common.
The other factor: resale. A used motor with transferable MPP coverage is meaningfully easier to sell, and at a higher price.
Buying a Used Mercury — Does the Warranty Transfer?
Mercury's standard warranty partially transfers to a second owner with documentation. The corrosion warranty transfers; the limited warranty transfers as long as you can prove the original purchase date and registration.
MPP transfers fully, regardless of original owner.
If you're buying a used Mercury under three years old, ask the seller for:
- Original sale receipt or dealer invoice (proves warranty start date)
- MPP contract documentation (if extended coverage was purchased)
- Service records from any authorized Mercury dealer (proves no warranty-voiding work)
Without those documents, the warranty is functionally invisible — Mercury can't verify your coverage at the parts counter, and you'll be paying out of pocket. We see this every spring: customers bring in a four-year-old Marketplace motor expecting warranty support, and there's no paperwork. The serial number alone isn't enough; Mercury wants the proof of original sale.
When we do pre-purchase inspections at HBW, the warranty paper trail is part of the report. (See our Used Outboard Buying Guide for the full inspection checklist.)
What Voids Mercury Warranty (the Real-World List)
The owner's manual has the full list. The ones we see most often in our shop:
- Wrong oil. Mercury 4-strokes need FC-W certified marine oil. Automotive oil voids cylinder-related claims. Use Mercury 25W-40 marine, or another FC-W spec marine oil.
- Skipping the 20-hour break-in service. Documented service is part of the warranty conditions.
- Skipping the 100-hour annual service. Same.
- Improper winterization. A cracked block from missed winterization isn't a manufacturing defect; it's an operator-side failure.
- Submersion. A motor that goes underwater is voided unless it's professionally serviced within hours and Mercury approves the recovery.
- Modification. Aftermarket performance chips, non-Mercury props in some cases, removed safety systems — all warranty-voiding.
- Commercial use on a recreational motor. SeaPro motors are commercial-rated; FourStroke and Pro XS are not. Running a non-SeaPro motor as a guide boat or rental fleet for hours per day exceeds the recreational-use clause.
The good news: none of those are accidental. Use the right oil, get the scheduled services, winterize properly, don't modify, don't submerge. That's the whole list. Our shop and most authorized dealers will document everything in your service file so you have proof if a claim comes up.
Canadian-Specific Things to Know
Warranty registration in Canada. Your dealer registers the warranty at point of sale. You should receive a confirmation email from Mercury Marine within a few days. If you don't, ask your dealer for a copy of the registration document. This is the single best evidence of coverage.
The dealer network. Every authorized Mercury dealer in Canada honours warranty work, regardless of where the motor was purchased. So if you buy in Ontario and move to BC, your warranty doesn't lapse — but the closest dealer is now four provinces away, and warranty work needs to be done at an authorized dealer.
Cross-border purchases. Mercury motors imported privately from the US do NOT have Canadian warranty coverage. This catches buyers who think they're getting a deal at a US dealer. Mercury Canada and Mercury USA are separate warranty entities — a US-purchased motor has US coverage only, and that coverage doesn't apply at Canadian dealers. If you're tempted, do the math including the lifetime cost of out-of-warranty repairs.
The HST/GST factor. When you buy MPP at the same time as a new motor, the MPP cost gets bundled into the original sale total — which means you pay HST on the MPP. Some customers split the purchases (buy the motor first, MPP a few months later) to spread the tax hit. The trade-off: Mercury sometimes runs MPP promotions that are only available at point-of-sale, so splitting can cost you a discount. Ask your dealer about current promos before deciding.
Why Where You Buy Matters
The motor is the same. The warranty terms are the same. What's different is the dealer.
A Mercury Platinum dealer (the highest tier) has factory-trained technicians, full diagnostic equipment, and guaranteed parts availability. Warranty claims processed by Platinum dealers go through faster — Mercury's internal escalation system treats Platinum-flagged claims as higher priority.
We've been a Mercury Platinum dealer in Ontario since 1965. Every new Mercury we sell gets registered at point of sale, documented in our service file, and supported by the same shop for the full warranty life. If something breaks, you don't have to explain who did the rigging or whether the break-in service was done — it's all in our records.
If you bought a Mercury elsewhere and want warranty work done in our shop, we can do that too — bring your purchase paperwork and we'll get the Mercury claim moving.
