Quick Answer
Mercury Product Protection (Platinum) extends your factory warranty up to 8 years total, covering mechanical AND electrical failures, including the ECU, sensors, alternator, wiring, gauges, and controls. HBW sells Platinum exclusively because the electrical exclusion on Gold is where modern Mercury motors fail most expensively. Customers who purchased their motor from HBW get 10% off.
- Covers what your factory warranty covers, for years longer — up to 8 years total (3-year factory + 5-year extended)
- Includes electrical (Gold does not) — alternator, ECU, sensors, harness, accessories
- Transferable to next owner, adds resale value
- Honoured at 3,600+ Mercury dealers across the US and Canada
- HBW exclusive: 10% off Platinum for customers who purchased their motor from HBW

What Mercury Product Protection Is
Your new Mercury comes with a 3-year factory limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. That covers you for the first 3 years. Mercury Product Protection is the factory-backed extended service contract that picks up when the limited warranty ends.
It is not a third-party insurance policy. It is not an aftermarket add-on. It is administered 100% by Mercury Marine, using genuine Mercury and Quicksilver parts, performed by authorized Mercury dealers, same factory standards as your original warranty.
Two tiers exist: Gold (mechanical failures only) and Platinum (mechanical + electrical + accessories). HBW sells Platinum exclusively. Here is why:
On modern Mercury outboards (2017+), most expensive failures are electrical. ECU replacement on a Pro XS V6: $2,500-$3,500 in parts before labour. SmartCraft sensor cascade failures: $1,200+. Alternator + voltage regulator on a Verado: $1,800+. Gold does not cover any of these. Platinum does.
For the price difference between the two tiers (typically $200-$400 across most HP bands), Platinum is the obvious call. We do not carry Gold because we do not want a customer to come back in year 6 with a $3,000 ECU failure and find out their coverage did not include it.

HBW exclusive: Customers who purchased their motor from HBW get 10% off any Platinum coverage tier. This is our way of saying thanks for buying the motor here.
When Platinum Makes Financial Sense
The honest math:
Buy it if:
- You plan to keep the motor 5+ years
- The motor is 150 HP or larger (electrical failures get expensive fast)
- You want predictable cost-of-ownership (no surprise $2,500-$5,000 repair bills)
- You expect to sell the boat within the coverage window (transferability adds resale value)
- You boat in remote areas where the on-water tow allowance matters
Skip it if:
- You are planning to flip the boat in 12-24 months
- The motor is under 25 HP (parts cheap, less to fail)
- You are a commercial or charter user (you are not eligible anyway)
For Ontario boaters who plan to keep their motor 5+ years, Platinum almost always pays for itself if even one major component fails during the coverage period. ECU, fuel injection pump, lower unit gears, or alternator failures alone often exceed the cost of the coverage.
Transferability and Resale Value
Platinum coverage is transferable to a subsequent recreational-use buyer within 30 days of sale. This matters at resale.
A 5-year-old Mercury 150 HP with active Platinum coverage to year 8 sells for 10-15% more than the same motor with no coverage. The buyer knows they have factory protection for the next 3 years. Sellers who include the transferable warranty in the listing close faster.
The motor must transfer to another recreational user (not commercial, not a dealer-purchased trade-in) for the warranty to follow it.
What Happens When You File a Claim
You do not deal with Mercury directly. You bring the boat to any authorized Mercury dealer (3,600+ across North America). They diagnose, contact Mercury for approval, and perform the repair using genuine Mercury parts. You pay the $50 deductible. Mercury covers the rest.
If you bought the warranty at HBW but you are broken down at a marina near Algonquin Park, you can have the work done at any authorized Mercury dealer up there. The contract follows the engine.
