Quick answer: If you're transiting the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) in 2026, the practical service question is: where do you get parts or mechanical help if something goes wrong en route? HBW is the answer on Rice Lake. We have the largest Mercury and Mercruiser parts inventory in Ontario, full mechanical service, an on-water towing capability for breakdowns or railroad-track incidents, and we're directly on the TSW. The 2026 transit is also supported by the Canada Strong Pass free lockage program (June 19 to September 7).
The Trent-Severn Waterway is 386 km of locks, lakes, and rivers that draws thousands of recreational boaters every summer. Most transits go smoothly. But a meaningful percentage of transit boats have a mechanical issue somewhere along the route. When that happens 30 km from any town, your options matter.
This guide is the dealer-side perspective on how to prepare for, and recover from, a Trent-Severn transit issue. It's written from HBW's position on Rice Lake, which sits in the middle of the TSW corridor and serves as the unplanned service stop for a meaningful number of transit boats every season.
HBW's position on the Trent-Severn
We're at 5369 Harris Boat Works Rd in Gores Landing, on the south shore of Rice Lake. Rice Lake is one of the TSW's larger lake segments, sitting between Peterborough (north) and Hastings (east). For boaters running west-to-east or east-to-west on the TSW, Rice Lake is usually a partial-day or overnight stop.
HBW is set up to keep Mercury boaters moving on the TSW. We have:
- The largest Mercury and Mercruiser parts inventory in Ontario. This is genuinely a competitive claim. For Mercury outboards and Mercruiser sterndrives, most spring service parts and a deep selection of legacy parts are on our shelf.
- Full Mercury service capability. Mercury CDS (Computer Diagnostic System) at our workstation. Mercury Platinum dealer credential. Mercury authorized warranty service. Most mid-season repairs handled same-day.
- On-water towing capability. If you break down on Rice Lake or hit the Rice Lake Railroad submerged tracks (this happens to first-time visitors), we can come out and tow you in.
- Fuel dock with ethanol-free 89. For boats that need clean fuel mid-transit, particularly older 2-stroke motors that don't tolerate E10 well.
We do not provide service calls away from Rice Lake. Boats come to us. But if you're on Rice Lake, on the TSW corridor, and you need help, we're the closest full-service Mercury option.
What we see breaking down on TSW transits
Several years of seeing transit boats come to our dock for unscheduled service has surfaced a consistent pattern. The boats and the failures cluster.
Common transit-induced failures we see:
- Cooling system failures. Impeller worn or stuck, raw water intake clogged with weeds (especially in mid-summer when Kawartha weed density peaks), thermostat stuck closed. Over-temperature alarm trips, customer limps to our dock.
- Fuel system contamination. Boats topping up at different marinas with variable fuel quality. Water in fuel, stale fuel from the trip start, or just contaminated tank. Spring-loaded into a transit, the boat fires Water in Fuel alarms and won't run cleanly.
- Battery issues. Multi-day transit with electronics running, batteries drain, charging system can't keep up at idle through locks. Motor cranks slowly or not at all at lock-up.
- Prop strikes. Submerged debris in the TSW, especially during high-water periods. Bent or damaged prop. Vibration alerts the owner to bring it in.
- Rice Lake Railroad bottom-out. The historic submerged railroad tracks on Rice Lake catch first-time visitors who don't know the local navigation hazards. Lower unit damage or prop damage results. We tow these in.
Kawartha weed pressure: the underestimated TSW hazard
Late June through July is peak weed density on Rice Lake and most of the Kawartha lakes. Seaweed, milfoil, and tape grass can foul props and clog water intakes in minutes if you cut through dense beds at speed.
For TSW transit boats specifically: if you're crossing Rice Lake or Stoney Lake in mid-summer, stick to marked channels and known clear water. Cutting cross-lake at speed in July can cost you a prop, an impeller, or both. We see a steady flow of weed-related service tickets during peak summer.
Weed pressure typically eases by mid-August as water temperatures slow growth.
Boat types we see most often on transit
The mix of boats doing the full TSW transit is more varied than people expect.
Most transient TSW boats: Larger cruisers with full inboard engines (typically diesel or older gas inboards). HBW does not service most full inboards. For inboard transit boats, our role is parts availability for shared components (fuel filters, hoses, batteries) and the on-water tow if needed.
Sterndrive transit boats: Mid-size cruisers with twin Mercruiser sterndrives are common. These we service directly. Most Mercruiser parts are on our shelf.
Outboard-powered transit boats: Single or twin Mercury outboard powered cruisers, larger fishing boats, and pontoons. Full HBW service capability.
Kicker presence: Roughly 10% of full TSW transit boats run with a kicker motor for emergency backup or low-speed lock approach. For boats doing the full Trent-to-Severn run, having a kicker is genuinely smart insurance. Boats without a kicker that break down mid-transit are entirely dependent on tow services or sailing-on-anchor.
Parts inventory: what's on our shelf
Specific competitive fact: HBW has the largest Mercury and Mercruiser parts inventory in Ontario. For TSW transit boats coming through with mechanical issues, this is often the difference between a same-day fix and a 3-7 day wait for parts to ship.
Common transit-related parts we stock:
- Mercury 10-micron water-separating fuel filters (multiple sizes)
- Mercury OEM impellers across the FourStroke and Verado lineup
- Mercury spark plugs across the common FourStroke and Pro XS family
- Mercruiser stern drive service parts (gimbal bellows, bellows clamps, raw water pumps)
- Mercury OEM propellers in common diameters and pitches
- Mercury batteries and battery cables
- Mercury CDS diagnostic capability for fault code work
If you're planning a TSW transit and want to know whether a specific Mercury part is on our shelf, call ahead. We can confirm in seconds.

Pre-transit checklist (the mechanical preparation)
If you're planning a TSW transit, the prep work matters as much as the route planning. Mechanical issues mid-transit are inconvenient at best and dangerous at worst.
Two to four weeks before transit:
- Fresh oil change (engine and lower unit)
- New 10-micron water-separating fuel filter
- New spark plugs if approaching service interval
- Impeller inspection (replace if showing wear or over 2 years old)
- Battery load test, replace if marginal
- Prop inspection for chips, bent blades, or fishing line in the shaft
- Full fuel tank with fresh, treated fuel (we recommend HBW's ethanol-free 89 for transit fuel)
Day of transit:
- Check engine oil, lower unit oil
- Verify battery voltage at rest (12.6+ V)
- Inspect cooling water flow at startup (telltale stream healthy and clean)
- Confirm bilge pump operation
- Cell phone fully charged plus a portable backup
- Contact list with HBW (905-342-2153), local marinas en route, and Canadian Coast Guard (1-800-267-6687 or VHF Channel 16)
When to call HBW vs. when to keep moving
