Honest power family pick
Mercury Pro XS or FourStroke for your bass boat?
Both are great. The real question is how you actually fish.
Choose Pro XS if
- ✓You fish bass tournaments or run in heavy chop
- ✓Your boat is rated for the higher RPM and Pro XS horsepower
- ✓You want maximum hole shot and top end
- ✓You are comfortable trading some fuel economy for performance
- ✓The boat will live mostly on lakes you ride hard
Pick Pro XS
Choose FourStroke if
- ✓You fish recreationally, not tournaments
- ✓Boat use includes family time, not just bass runs
- ✓You want lower fuel burn and a quieter idle
- ✓The Pro XS price gap does not justify the speed gain for your use
- ✓You are repowering an older bass boat that was originally FourStroke
Pick FourStroke
When in doubt:For competitive tournaments, Pro XS pays for itself in time saved between spots. For weekend fishing, FourStroke is the smarter buy.
Bass boats are a different conversation
Bass boats are built for one thing: run fast to a spot and fish it well. They're lighter than most recreational hulls, built to plane fast, and typically used by anglers who care about both speed and reliability.
The right Mercury for a bass boat depends on whether you're fishing competitively or recreationally. That one variable changes the right motor family, the right HP, and whether the Pro XS premium is money well spent.
Pro XS vs FourStroke for bass fishing: the honest comparison
Pro XS is Mercury's performance line, built for fast acceleration, high top speed, and aggressive hole shot. On comparable bass boats running the same HP, Pro XS is noticeably faster than FourStroke. The motors are lighter and tuned for higher RPM use.
FourStroke is Mercury's standard recreational line, built for fuel efficiency, smooth running, and reliability. At the same HP rating, FourStroke costs less than Pro XS.
The decision rule: If tournament fishing, where getting to a spot first matters, Pro XS earns the premium. If recreational bass fishing, FourStroke at 150–175 HP is an excellent motor without the premium.

HP recommendations for bass boats
Recreational bass fishing (17–19 ft): 150–175 HP FourStroke or Pro XS. Plenty of power for Ontario lakes without tournament-level cost.
Semi-competitive to competitive Ontario tournament fishing: 200–225 HP Pro XS is the most common range on 19–21 ft bass boats. Gets you where you need to go before the other boats do.
Elite level, 21 ft and up: 250–300 HP Pro XS. Common at the top of the Ontario tournament trail. Match the motor to the hull rating, never exceed it.

Should you repower or buy a new bass boat?
If the hull is solid and the boat fits your fishing, repower. A new Pro XS transforms an older bass boat. You get modern fuel efficiency (dramatically better than older 2-strokes), current electronics integration, and a full Mercury warranty, without paying for a new hull you don't need.
If the hull is outdated, damaged, or doesn't fit the way you fish, a new boat makes more sense. We can help you think through the math either way.
Shaft length and trim
Most bass boats run 20-inch shaft with a jack plate. Some hulls with higher transom mounts or deeper set-ups need 25-inch. Check your boat specs or bring it in and we'll measure.
Proper trim is a big deal on performance fishing rigs. Getting WOT RPM and trim dialled in correctly is part of the sea trial on every repower we do.
The kicker question on bass boats
Most bass boats don't use a dedicated trolling kicker the way walleye rigs do. Bass fishing is run-and-gun, not slow-trolling at 1.5 mph.
What is standard at the tournament level is a bow-mount trolling motor for positioning work. That's different from a transom-mounted kicker, and it doesn't require any modification to the main motor setup.
If you're considering a kicker for a backup or occasional slow-trolling use, not all bass boat hulls are configured for transom-mount kickers. Bring the boat in and we'll assess whether it works for your specific setup.

What we see at HBW
Bass-boat repower customers at our shop almost always come in asking for Pro XS. The decision is rarely about HP -- it's about hole-shot and top-end on a tournament rig that needs to run hard from spot to spot. A Pro XS 200 on a Ranger 188 will outpunch a FourStroke 200 even though dyno numbers are close.
The Verado V8 conversation comes up for the biggest boats (21-foot+ bass boats with twin-engine setups, or heavy multi-species rigs). Those are the customers running Champion 220 or Skeeter ZX series.

FAQ
Is Pro XS really faster than FourStroke?
Yes, noticeably so at comparable HP. Pro XS motors are lighter and tuned for higher RPM, with faster hole shot and higher top speed. The difference is real and matters in tournament fishing. For recreational use, the gap still exists but may not justify the price difference depending on your use case.
What shaft length for a bass boat?
Most bass boats use 20-inch shaft with a jack plate. Some deeper hulls or higher transom mounts need 25-inch. Check your boat specs or bring it by for measurement.
Is 200 HP enough for a 21-foot bass boat?
For recreational use, yes. For tournament fishing where every minute to a spot counts, 225–250 HP is preferred on 21-foot boats. Match power to your competitive needs, and always stay within the capacity plate.
Should I repower or buy a new bass boat?
If your hull is solid and you like your boat, repower. A new Pro XS transforms an older hull. If the boat itself is the problem, new makes more sense. We'll help you think through the specific math.
What's the best Mercury for Ontario bass tournaments?
For Ontario tournament fishing at the semi-competitive to competitive level, Mercury Pro XS 200–225 HP is the most common choice. At elite level on 21+ ft boats, 250–300 HP Pro XS. For budget-focused entrants on local circuits, FourStroke 150 HP is a solid option.
What warranty does a Mercury outboard come with in Canada?
Standard 3-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Annual service by an authorized Mercury dealer is required to maintain warranty validity. As a Mercury Platinum Dealer, we handle warranty claims directly, you don't deal with the manufacturer independently.
Can I use a kicker motor on a bass boat?
Most bass boats don't use a kicker for typical bass fishing. A bow-mount trolling motor is standard for positioning. A transom-mounted kicker is possible on some hulls; bring the boat in and we'll assess whether it makes sense for your specific setup.
