A Mercury or Honda buyer walks into our shop with the same two questions: which motor is actually better, and what does my service look like over the next 10 years? We sell Mercury. We don't sell or service Honda. So this isn't a balanced review, the Mercury section was not written by Switzerland. But we still try to keep the comparisons fair.

Where Honda actually wins
Honda makes good motors. In specific use cases, Honda is the right call.
Refinement, noise, and vibration. In our experience, many Honda buyers value refinement and report Honda BF motors running quieter and smoother than equivalent Mercury motors in the 9.9 to 90 HP range. Honda's automotive engineering background shows up here.
Long-term operating cost at mid-horsepower. Honda BF motors have a deserved reputation for low maintenance cost over 10+ year ownership.
Cottage kicker and small-engine use case. Honda BF2.3, BF5, BF8, BF9.9, BF15, BF20 are excellent small motors. Quiet, reliable, well-engineered for the cottage workload.
Where Mercury wins
Service network density in our region. In the Kawarthas, Lake Simcoe basin, and Trent-Severn corridor, Mercury has more certified dealer locations than Honda Marine. Brand loyalty is free. Dealer support is not.
Lineup breadth above 350 HP. Honda's biggest outboard is the BF350 V8 (350 HP, launched in Canada in 2024). Mercury runs from 2.5 HP portables through 600 HP Verado V12. If you want anything above 350 HP - 400 HP Verado V8 or V10, 450R, or the V12. Honda doesn't have an answer. At HBW, FourStroke and Pro XS are our standard stock; Verado and the Racing line are available by special order, not off the shelf.
Pro XS performance. Honda has no direct counterpart to Mercury Pro XS. If you fish tournaments or want hole-shot performance on a bass boat, this matters.
Parts availability in Canada. Mercury parts ship from Canadian distribution centres. In our experience, Honda Marine parts often route through US distribution, which can add several days to a parts order in Ontario. For mid-season failures, those days matter.
The Rice Lake local-service reality (the part most buyers underestimate)
HBW is the only Mercury dealer on Rice Lake. We are also the only brand-name outboard service of any kind on Rice Lake. There is no Honda dealer on Rice Lake. There is no Yamaha dealer on Rice Lake. If your boat lives here and you want brand-name service close to home, the choice is Mercury at HBW or a 30-90 minute drive somewhere else.
Honda Marine certified service near Rice Lake: Honda Marine's dealer locator lists two certified dealers within 75 km of HBW - one in the Peterborough area (about 30 km) and one in the Havelock area (about 45 km).
For Mercury owners on Rice Lake: drop the boat at our dock, walk home, pick it up when it's done. That's the local-service advantage.
What HBW has on the shelf
We keep the largest Mercury and Mercruiser parts inventory in Ontario. For Mercury owners, common spring service parts and most warranty parts are on our shelf, not on a backorder list. For Honda owners, parts come from elsewhere, which is fine, until you need a thermostat in the second week of July.
The 8-year warranty conversation
In 2026, both Mercury and Honda offer extended warranty programs that can reach 8 years total coverage.
Honda warranty stack (2026): 5 years standard recreational + 3 years HondaCare extended = 8 years maximum.
Mercury warranty stack (2026): 3 years standard limited (with 3 years corrosion concurrent) + up to 5 years Mercury Product Protection (MPP) extended = up to 8 years total coverage. MPP is a separate extended-coverage purchase, not part of the standard warranty.
The maximum coverage period is now equal. The bigger practical question is where you take the motor in year 5 when something needs attention. If your local Honda dealer has changed hands or closed, your warranty is worth less. If your local Mercury Premier dealer is HBW, your warranty is worth what it should be.
Mercury PGM-FI vs Honda PGM-FI cold-start
Both Mercury EFI and Honda PGM-FI handle cold starts well at 4°C (typical early May cottage opening). We don't have field data showing a meaningful cold-start advantage for either brand at modern model years.
Small-engine weight: a marginal concern
Mercury 9.9 FourStroke is typically a few pounds lighter than equivalent Honda BF9.9, the exact gap varies by model year and shaft length. We rarely hear customers raise weight as a concern at the desk.
The HBW on-water test
Every repower gets an on-water test on Rice Lake before pickup. No exceptions.
