Five factors affect how thorough your opener prep needs to be:
1. How you stored the boat over winter. Indoor, heated storage versus outdoor uncovered changes what you are walking into.
2. How recently you ran the motor. A motor that ran in October is different from one that has not turned over in eight months.
3. Whether HBW or a shop did your spring commissioning. Professional commissioning catches things a DIY check can miss.
4. Your opener-day plans. A solo trolling run on a familiar stretch of Rice Lake needs less prep than a four-person tournament start.
5. How far you are trailering. A boat at a cottage dock needs different prep than a trailer launch 90 minutes from home.
The Two-Week Walleye Opener Prep Checklist
Two Weeks Before Opener
- Confirm spring commissioning is complete. If it is not, book it now. Service slots fill in May.
- Schedule any final service at hbw.wiki/service if needed.
- Check your fishing licence is valid for the new season. Renew online if not.
- Confirm your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is on the boat. It is a lifetime certification, you should have the original card.
- Confirm your Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) is displayed on the bow and current. As of August 8, 2026, a renewal costs $24.41 and is valid for five years. Transport Canada adjusts the fee for inflation each April 1, so verify the current amount before applying. Without a valid PCL, you can be fined.
One Week Before Opener
- Test the main motor on the water. Confirm cooling, charging, throttle response, and shift smoothness. Do not skip this.
- Test the kicker. Start it, run it for five to ten minutes, shift it into gear at trolling speed. Stale fuel and gummed carburetors are the most common kicker failures. Better to find out this week than on opener morning.
- Test trolling at walleye speed, roughly 1.5 mph. Make sure the kicker holds that speed smoothly.
- Test all electronics: GPS, sonar, VHF, lights, stereo.
- Check the live well: pump, drain, valves all working.
- Inspect fishing gear: rods, reels, lines, lures, terminal tackle.
- Check all required safety gear: a Transport Canada-approved PFD for every person on board, throwable cushion, anchor and rope, paddle, bailer, sound device, lights, fire extinguisher.
- Top off fuel with fresh gas. If you treated your tank last fall with stabilizer and ran it through the system, you are in better shape. If not, fill with fresh and add stabilizer before any long storage.

Pre-opener prep in the order that matters
Walleye opener morning is the worst time to find a problem. Run these five checks in this sequence the week before, not the morning of.
Battery and electrical
?Does the main battery load test, and are all connections clean?
💡Cold spring mornings expose weak batteries. Load-test it on the bench, don't trust a resting voltage reading. Wire-brush terminals and grease them.
Fuel system and filter
?Is the fuel fresh, stabilized, and is the filter under a year old?
💡Old fuel is the #1 spring no-start at our shop. Run the tank near empty in fall, top up with fresh in spring, and replace the water-separator filter while you're in there.
Motor flush and tell-tale
?Will the motor start, idle smoothly on muffs, and produce a steady tell-tale stream?
💡Steady tell-tale within 30 seconds of start means the impeller is good. Weak or absent stream means stop and replace before the lake.
Trailer bearings and tires
?Do the trailer hubs run cool after a 20-minute test tow, and are tires at sidewall PSI?
💡Cold-stored bearings dry out. Spin the wheels by hand listening for grinding, and check date code on tires. A blowout on opener weekend ends the trip.
Live well, nav lights, electronics
?Does the live well fill and drain, and do nav lights work on both bow and stern?
💡Walleye opener often means early starts and late returns in low light. Nav lights are not optional at dusk. Test the live well pump before you need it for keepers.

- Pack the cooler, pre-tie leaders, and rig rods.
- Charge all electronics and batteries that need it.
- Confirm launch time and meeting point with your partners if you are not going solo.

- Arrive at the launch early. Public ramps on opener morning are busy.

- Launch and run the motor briefly before going far from the dock.
- Verify fish finder and GPS are on and reading before you reach your zone.

The Most Common Opener Morning Failures
A weak or dead battery is one of the most common opener-morning failures we see. The battery sat all winter and was never maintained or tested. Prevention: charge and load-test it one week before opener, then replace it if it fails the test.
Kicker won't start is the next most common. Fuel sat all winter without stabilizer, the carburetor gummed up. Prevention: run the kicker for five to ten minutes one week before opener.
Stale fuel in the main tank causes hard starts and rough running. Prevention: stabilize last fall or run the tank down before adding fresh gas in spring.
Missing safety gear turns an opener into an OPP stop. Marine patrols are active on opener weekend.

Pre-Opener Fishing Intel (Zone 17, Rice Lake Area)
