If you've seen the "$2,000 for 50 more horsepower" headlines floating around, those are wrong. The real picture is more interesting, and probably more useful, than the rumour. Here's the honest dealer breakdown.

What Mercury Boost actually does
Mercury Boost is a calibration upgrade that changes how an eligible motor responds during throttle-up. According to Mercury's official material:
- Improved mid-range acceleration and throttle response
- 5% to 21% quicker zero-to-top-speed acceleration in five published tests
- No change to peak rated horsepower
- No change to top speed, maximum RPM, or time to plane
- Automatic activation only when Mercury's throttle and RPM conditions are met
Mercury's published examples range from 5% quicker on a 20-foot deep-V with a 300 HP FourStroke to 21% quicker on a 19-foot fishing boat with a 175 HP Pro XS. Those are application-specific comparisons, not a promise for another hull, load, propeller, or operating condition.
Mercury Boost won the 2026 Miami Innovation Award for advancing outboard engine performance. The award was for software-based response improvement, not for peak HP.
Which motors are actually eligible
This is where the early online rumour mill got it most wrong. Mercury's June 2026 documentation lists these dealer-upgrade families, subject to serial-number and configuration requirements:
Dealer-installed Boost upgrade (existing motors)
- 175, 200, 250, 300 HP FourStroke, serial 2B529482 through 3B612424
- 175, 200, 225, 250, 300 HP Pro XS, serial 2B529482 through 3B612424
- 250, 300 HP Verado, serial 2B529482 through 3B612424
- 350 HP Verado, serial range 3B266064 through 3B578265
- Mercury Racing 150R, serial 3B547096 through 3B612424
Factory-equipped Boost
Some newer motors are factory-equipped starting at published serial thresholds. Model year or build quarter alone is not enough; check the exact serial number because the motor may need a paid unlock, may already include Boost, or may require a dealer software update.
NOT eligible (despite what you may have read)
- Mercury Racing 200R, 250R, 300R, 400R, and 500R, not on the eligible list
- 400 and 425 HP V10, not on the eligible list; the 350 HP V10 has its own published rules
- 500 and 600 HP V12, not on the eligible list
- Any outboard below 175 HP (with the single exception of the Mercury Racing 150R)
- Earlier motors below the published minimum serial; later serials may be factory-equipped and require a status check instead of a paid unlock
If anyone tells you Boost is available for a motor, verify the exact engine and serial number in Mercury's current system before paying.
The serial-number window matters even when the family and horsepower appear on the list. Motors at or above the published factory threshold may already include Boost or need a dealer update rather than a paid unlock.
What it actually costs

Is Boost actually worth it?
Now the honest question. Three scenarios.
Boost vs upgrading to a bigger motor (the honest framing)
This is the question we hear most. "Is Boost a way to skip buying a bigger motor?"
No. Here is why:
- Boost does not change peak HP. A 200 HP V8 Pro XS with Boost is still a 200 HP motor at WOT.
- Boost does not change top speed or time to plane.
- Boost improves how quickly you reach WOT, not what WOT actually is.
If your boat is underpowered (won't hold plane with passengers, runs out of breath up-current, can't push the load you need), Boost won't fix that. You need more cubic inches.
If your boat has enough motor but you want sharper mid-range response, first confirm propeller, engine height, load, and setup. Then compare Boost on the exact eligible serial number.
The honest framing: Boost is a response tuning upgrade, not a power upgrade. Two different problems.
When Boost makes sense (checklist)
- Your motor is on the official Mercury eligible list (check serial number)
- You regularly use full-throttle mid-range acceleration and understand that time to plane does not change
