Quick Answer
Mercury Boost is a software-based engine calibration update, not a hardware kit, that improves mid-range acceleration by 5, 21% on eligible motors. Eligibility is determined by serial number, not model year. The dealer-installed version covers FourStroke 175, 300 HP, Pro XS 175, 300 HP, and Verado 250, 350 HP from specific serial numbers (see table below). The factory-installed version comes pre-loaded on new Pro XS and Verado models built in Q2 2026 and later. Boost does not void Mercury's warranty.

Mercury announced Boost as part of its 2026 technology rollout and described it as the starting point for a broader set of software-based performance upgrades. It does one thing: recalibrates how the engine delivers power through the mid-range RPM band, producing faster acceleration from idle to wide-open throttle without touching internal components.
The result is a 5, 21% improvement in mid-range acceleration and zero-to-top-speed performance. The range is real, the specific gain depends on hull shape, load, prop selection, and the current factory calibration. Even 5% is noticeable on a loaded boat.
What Boost Changes (and What It Doesn't)
What Boost changes:
- Mid-range throttle response
- Zero-to-top-speed run times
- Overall throttle feel, the engine feels more responsive
What Boost does not change:
- Rated horsepower
- Fuel consumption
- Physical components
- Mercury factory warranty coverage
Boost is a factory-backed, manufacturer-approved calibration. It does not void Mercury warranty coverage or Mercury Protection Plan coverage.
Which Engines Are Eligible?
Eligibility is by serial number, not model year.

Important note on the 350 HP Verado: Eligibility is within a specific serial range (3B266064 to 3B578266). If your 350 falls outside this range, it is not eligible for the dealer-installed version.
Factory-Installed (New 2026 Production Motors)
Boost comes pre-loaded on:
- Pro XS 175, 300 HP
- Verado 250, 300, 350 HP
- Racing 150R
Applies to models manufactured in Q2 2026 and later.
How to Find Your Mercury Serial Number
The serial number is the only way to confirm eligibility.
- Transom bracket, most common. Port (left) side of the mounting bracket. Metal data plate.
- Engine block, stamped directly on some models.
- Under the cowling, printed on a label on newer outboards.
Practical tip: take a clear photo of the plate and save it on your phone. You will want it any time you call a dealer or need warranty service.

How to Get Boost Installed
Boost is dealer-installed. You cannot download or apply it yourself, Mercury's diagnostic software is dealer-exclusive.
The process:
- Bring the engine to HBW (or schedule a service call)
- HBW confirms serial number eligibility
- Boost calibration is applied via Mercury's software interface
- A short test run confirms the update
Most dealers can complete it in a single service visit. Mercury has not published a standard retail price for the Boost upgrade. Dealers set their own service rates. At most Mercury dealers in Ontario, shop rates run in the $120, $175 per hour range, and installation is primarily technician time, roughly 1, 2 hours. If you are already bringing the engine in for spring commissioning or annual service, ask to have Boost done at the same visit to minimize total labor cost.
Why This Matters for Ontario Boating
Mid-range acceleration is where the engine is most felt in real use. Not at full throttle, but in the transition from idle to cruising speed, when you are launching off Rice Lake's shallow flats, loading a pontoon with six passengers, or accelerating through a turn.
A 5, 21% improvement in that band is most noticeable on:
- Heavily loaded pontoons
- Family runabouts with full gear and passengers
- Any setup where hole-shot or mid-range feel sluggish
Ontario's boating season is short. If your eligible motor qualifies for Boost, getting it done before spring launch is worth a conversation with us.
For engine repairs, we only service Mercury and Mercruiser.
What we see at HBW
Boost is Mercury's software-only HP upgrade for select FourStroke and Pro XS models -- adds 10-25 HP via a flash, no hardware change. The most common customer who comes in asking is a 150 FourStroke owner on a pontoon who wishes they had specced the 175.
Eligibility depends on year, model code, and powerhead serial number. We can check eligibility in our portal in a few minutes. Flash time at the shop is roughly 90 minutes plus the customer-portal activation. Not every motor is a candidate -- carbureted and pre-2018 EFI are typically out.

FAQs
Does Boost void my warranty?
No. Boost is an official Mercury program and factory-backed calibration. It does not void Mercury factory warranty or any Mercury Protection Plan coverage.
Does Boost work on twin-engine setups?
Yes, if both engines are eligible. Each engine is updated individually. If your twins have different serial numbers, eligibility is assessed per engine.
What if my serial number isn't eligible?
If your motor falls outside current eligibility criteria, the upgrade is not available at this time, there is no aftermarket equivalent. Mercury has indicated Boost will expand to additional models. In the meantime, the best performance improvements for ineligible engines are mechanical: correct prop specification, fresh spark plugs, clean lower unit with fresh gear lube, and a properly maintained ignition system.
Can Boost be reversed?
In theory, yes, it is a software calibration and Mercury has the tools to modify software-based updates. Mercury has not published a standard reversal procedure. In practice, the improvement is consistently viewed as positive, it changes only the mid-range band, not cruise or wide-open-throttle behavior.
How do I know if my FourStroke qualifies?
FourStroke models in the 175, 300 HP range from serial number 2B529482 are eligible for the dealer-installed retrofit. For factory-installed Boost on new motors, it applies to Pro XS and Verado models built in Q2 2026 and later. The fastest answer: call HBW at 905-342-2153 with your serial number.
Is Boost worth it on Rice Lake?
If your eligible engine already feels responsive with a light load, the improvement will be subtler. If you routinely run heavy, full pontoon, loaded family bowrider, anything where the hole-shot feels sluggish, Boost is one of the most cost-effective upgrades available. It costs a fraction of a new motor and requires no hardware.
