It does one thing: recalibrates how the engine delivers power through the mid-range RPM band, producing faster acceleration from idle to wide-open throttle without touching internal components.
Mercury describes the feature as improving mid-range acceleration and throttle response. In five published boat-and-engine tests, zero-to-top-speed acceleration was 5 to 21% quicker, with results varying by the complete setup and conditions.
What Boost Changes (and What It Doesn't)

Important note on the 350 HP Verado: The paid dealer-upgrade range is 3B266064 to 3B578265. Mercury lists 3B578266 and above as factory-equipped; some of those engines may still need a dealer software update so the app can interface with Boost.
Factory-Equipped Motors
Boost is standard on specified newer engines. Mercury lists 3B612425 and above as factory-equipped for the standard affected families and Racing 150R, and 3B578266 and above for the 350 HP V10. Factory status is identified by exact model and serial threshold, not by build quarter alone. HBW checks the serial because a motor may require a paid unlock, may already be factory-equipped, or may need a dealer software update before the Mercury Marine App can show the correct status.
How to Find Your Mercury Serial Number
The serial number is the only way to confirm eligibility.
- Transom bracket, most common. Port (left) side of the mounting bracket. Metal data plate.
- Engine block, stamped directly on some models.
- Under the cowling, printed on a label on newer outboards.
Practical tip: take a clear photo of the plate and save it on your phone. You will want it any time you call a dealer or need warranty service.

Boost can be purchased and unlocked through Mercury's supported app flow on some eligible single-engine boats or through an authorized Mercury dealer. App eligibility has configuration limitations, and some motors require a dealer software update.
The process:
- Bring the engine to HBW
- HBW confirms serial number eligibility
- HBW confirms whether the motor needs a paid unlock, software update, or is already factory-equipped
- A short test run confirms the update
Mercury does not publish one universal Canadian retail total that applies to every motor and visit. HBW confirms eligibility, the current upgrade price, and any required shop work from the exact serial number before booking. Do not use a converted foreign dealer price or a generic labour estimate as a Canadian quote.
Why This Matters for Ontario Boating
Mid-range acceleration is where the engine is most felt in real use. Not at full throttle, but in the transition from idle to cruising speed, when you are launching off Rice Lake's shallow flats, loading a pontoon with six passengers, or accelerating through a turn.
Mercury's published 5 to 21% figures are zero-to-top-speed test results, not a promised improvement for every boat. The mid-range response change is most relevant on:
- Heavily loaded pontoons
- Family runabouts with full gear and passengers
- Eligible setups where mid-range response is the actual complaint

A common customer who asks is a 150 FourStroke pontoon owner who wishes they had specced the 175, and we have to be straight with them: standard outboards below 175 HP are outside the current Boost list, except the Mercury Racing 150R. If time to plane is the complaint, Boost is not the promised fix; start with correct horsepower, propeller, setup, and load.
Eligibility depends on engine family, horsepower, model code, serial number, software status, and boat configuration, not model year alone. HBW checks the current Mercury status before quoting. Not every motor or app-based installation path is a candidate.
For HBW repowers, standard stock conversations usually start with FourStroke and Pro XS; Verado is service, special-order, or offshore context only.

Does Boost void my warranty?
No. Boost is an official Mercury program and factory-backed calibration. Mercury states that installing and using Boost does not void the Mercury Marine Limited Warranty.
Does Boost work on twin-engine setups?
The Mercury Marine App purchase and unlock path is currently limited to select single-engine configurations. A dealer must check each engine and the boat configuration for a multi-engine installation.
What if my serial number isn't eligible?
If the current Mercury eligibility check says the motor is not eligible, Boost is not available for that unit through the supported path. Confirm propeller, engine height, load, hull condition, and normal maintenance before deciding whether a different rated motor is needed.
